Segregation policies, such as the establishment of private schools to replace public ones in Mississippi, were fueled by a small group of upper middle class white individuals who actively incited racial tensions among lower income white populations to garner support. These policies were often based on a toxic combination of racial and class warfare, where affluent white people sought to maintain power and benefits by pitting poor white and black communities against each other. Leveraging racist stereotypes and fear, they managed to manipulate public opinion to their advantage, ultimately leading to the perpetuation of discriminatory policies that affected everyone involved.
