Self-deception can lead to avoiding constructive actions and making real changes in life, perpetuating problems and difficulties. Mindless self-deception distorts reality, limits potential, obstructs healthy relationships, and can lead to acts of cruelty. Manipulating memories to deceive ourselves, including denying events or creating false memories, allows us to reduce cognitive dissonance and alleviate mental pain. By distorting memories, individuals can turn their present disappointing lives into triumphant victories over adversity.
