ADHD medication: What do I need to know?

Understood Explains

NOTE

Proper ADHD Medication Reduces Risk of Substance Abuse

Individuals with ADHD are at a higher risk of addictive behavior, often trying to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol. Properly treated ADHD individuals have a reduced risk of substance abuse compared to untreated cases. Medication helps in feeling more in control, leading to lower rates of alcohol and drug abuse, lower relapse rates in addiction recovery, improved impulse control, emotional regulation, task completion, success, and self-esteem. Interestingly, individuals without ADHD have a higher addiction risk than those with ADHD, mainly due to recreational misuse of ADHD medication. Overall, the risk of addiction to ADHD medication is minimal when used as prescribed by individuals with ADHD.
