NOTE

Fructose and Uric Acid: A Bi-Directional Relationship

Fructose consumption is known to transiently raise uric acid levels, but its role in chronic elevation of uric acid remains unclear. There are suggestions that high fructose intake may lead to increased food consumption, potentially driving obesity and energy imbalance, which in turn may elevate uric acid levels. Genetic studies indicate that higher adiposity can cause hyperuricemia, emphasizing that obesity may be the primary factor rather than fructose itself. Additionally, certain medications, particularly diuretics and low-dose aspirin, can influence uric acid levels. Dietary sources, particularly high-purine foods such as red meat and beer, which is rich in yeast, should also be considered in the context of uric acid levels.
