LDL particles differ in composition based on the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in their core. A normally composed LDL particle contains 80% cholesterol and 20% triglycerides. An increase in triglycerides results in a decrease in cholesterol, and vice versa, due to the fixed volume of the particle. Even a small size difference in LDL particles can translate to a significant change in the number of cholesterol molecules they can carry.
