Indirect reciprocity is built on the principle of helping others in a community, knowing that assistance will be reciprocated when needed. This system is supported by the mechanism of reputation, where individuals who do not contribute back to the community earn a negative reputation, leading to consequences. By participating fully and helping others, individuals benefit more than if they had tried to accomplish everything on their own.
