In the late 18th century, China had high demand for commodities produced there, while the West lacked items in demand in China. This led to a cash trade system where silver was used to buy Chinese goods for profit. British traders, frustrated by the constant silver expenditure, benefited from silver mines in the Spanish New World. The mines in the Spanish New World were a significant source of global silver, with around half of it eventually reaching China through various trade routes.
