NOTE

Strong Bi-directional Relationships between Physical and Mental Health

There are strong bi-directional relationships between physical and mental health. Individuals with diabetes are more prone to various mental disorders, notably depression and anxiety. Those with diabetes are about twice as likely to develop depression, which tends to last four times longer. Similarly, individuals with cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, and strokes are three to five times more likely to develop depression and anxiety. Recent research shows that individuals with obesity are also more susceptible to a wide range of mental disorders, such as psychotic disorders, depression, anxiety, ADHD, and nicotine dependence, with the likelihood ranging from 50% to over 300%. This indicates that obesity can lead to nicotine dependence, increasing the chances of becoming a smoker or a vapor.
