ADHD as a Spectrum and Continuum
ADHD is a spectrum of severity related to executive functioning, with most people falling within a bell curve distribution. Diagnosis occurs when symptoms become severe and start causing harm. It is important to understand that ADHD is a continuum, ranging from symptomatic but not impaired individuals to those with moderate or severe impairment. Diagnosis is made based on the level of impairment. It is not a category you are either in or out of, but rather a spectrum where people can experience different levels of impairment. Diagnosis is not given simply based on being energetic or talkative, but when symptoms lead to harm and impairment.
