Practicing self-compassion involves kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness to alleviate suffering. In self-compassion, one must intentionally focus on their suffering, offering kindness and acknowledging that they are not alone. This approach differs from loving-kindness practice where suffering is not a prerequisite. Self-compassion helps in building the muscle of friendliness, preparing individuals for when suffering arises. It is crucial to strike a balance between being too attached and too detached to cultivate self-compassion effectively. Developmentally, self-awareness evolves from a state of being solely identified to becoming a subject and object, leading to the internal dialogue that can sometimes turn into self-criticism.
