Tenochtitlan, later transformed into Mexico City, stood as the pivotal center of authority in the region and for the emerging Mexican nation for over 700 years. Founded by the Mexica Aztecs in 1325 on an island in Lake Texcoco, Tenochtitlan evolved into an empire within 200 years. After its fall in 1521, it emerged as Mexico City, the capital of New Spain, and functioned as a key administrative and financial hub of the Spanish Empire until gaining independence in 1821.
