The theory that yawning is triggered by an imbalance in blood gases, where the brain signals a need for more oxygen or carbon dioxide through yawning, has faced scrutiny. Scientific studies, like the one conducted by Provine and colleagues, have shown that manipulating oxygen or carbon dioxide levels did not affect the frequency of yawning, contrary to the theory. While the manipulations did increase breathing rates, they did not lead to changes in yawning behavior.
