Optimism is a powerful tool that can benefit everyone. Optimists are more persistent and don't give up easily. They are half as likely to get depressed when faced with bad events and are more resilient. People also prefer to be around optimists. In the workplace and sports, optimists bounce back from defeat better than pessimists. Optimistic pitchers and hitters perform better in close games. Optimism has been found to add an average of six to eight years to one's life, making it even more important than exercise.
