During slow-wave sleep, heart rate varies with each breath due to lower norepinephrine levels. In REM sleep, heart rate is controlled by parasympathetic activity and dream content. In PTSD, norepinephrine levels remain high, preventing weakening of memory encoding. This affects the hippocampus, hindering the ability to learn new things.
