The Rise of the Neo-Assyrian Empire
By the middle of the 10th century BC, the powerful territorial states of the late Bronze Age had vanished, paving the way for the emergence of smaller political entities. In contrast, Assyria maintained its state structure and the legacy of Imperial rulers. The Neo-Assyrian rulers sought to recapture past greatness, blurring the distinction between the Middle Assyrian and Neo-Assyrian periods. Assyria's expansion in the Iron Age was facilitated by encountering less resistance compared to the late Bronze Age powers. This transition laid the foundation for Assyria to become the first world empire, marked by phases of expansion, consolidation, internal conflict, and conquests to reclaim Assyrian lands from previous occupiers.
