I had conversations with Travis, Ryan, and Garrett, the founders of Uber, as well as other board members. I did my due diligence and considered the opportunity. Working with great people, making an impact, and being part of a company that makes an impact were all important factors. Despite some uncertainty, being CEO allowed me to build my own team and we've brought in new talented individuals. Uber's unique impact on cities made it appealing. The financials weren't a major concern since the company was still young. It was a challenging tech turnaround, but Uber had a strong global position, talented employees, and a well-known brand. When a company that's a verb asks you to run it, you say yes, as my dad advised. So sometimes it's best to keep things simple and take a shot.
