The weakening of the dominance of the evaluative self came not from destroying self-knowledge but by including dynamic sensory impressions alongside conceptual knowledge. In studying negative emotions like inducing sadness, it was observed that the shutting down of sensory impressions of the body, including visual senses, was a significant predictor of depression. The key risk marker for depression was the loss of dynamic sensory signals from the brain. Rumination in sadness isn't inherently harmful; it's the echo chamber of thoughts that can be destructive.
