In the 1980s, the FAA wanted to combat sleep deprivation in pilots. Researchers Dr. Dinges and Dr. Rosekind suggested placing a nap at the start of a flight to build resilience against later sleep deprivation. They called it prophylactic naps, but the FAA chose the term power naps to invoke strength. And so, the term power nap was born.
