After the death of Marcus Aurelius, the Roman Empire faced a significant crisis during the third century. Commodus and his successors were incompetent rulers. Septimius Severus exacerbated financial problems by debasing the coinage. The Severan dynasty showcased bad decision-making and incompetence, leading to a crisis in 235 AD. This crisis led to a period of turmoil with six different emperors in 238 AD. It would take 35 years before a competent leader took office again after this tumultuous period.
