There are three kinds of fat: white fat, brown fat, and beige fat. White fat is a traditional energy storage site low in mitochondria. Brown fat, found between the shoulder blades and neck, is rich in mitochondria and can directly convert food into energy. Unlike white fat, brown fat is thermogenic and can use energy directly. Beige fat is intermediate, possessing some mitochondria but not as many as brown fat.
