Cognitive bypassing is a common form of avoidance that some people use to cope with uncomfortable emotions or feelings. It involves using the mind to think their way around a problem, resulting in overthinking, intellectualizing or rationalizing of their feelings rather than feeling them. However, insight on its own is not enough to solve problems as it gets trapped in insight. Cognitive solutions can be helpful, but the right balance needs to be struck. Telling somebody to feel their feelings or stop bypassing is often not useful. Ways to work with tendencies to bypass authentic experiences were explored.
