The window of tolerance refers to an individual's capacity to handle stress and distress. When operating within this window, individuals can be present, process through feelings, connect with others, and work through trauma effectively. However, trauma survivors often experience hyper arousal, where small triggers can lead to overwhelming responses like fight-flight-freeze reactions. In hyper arousal, individuals may feel threatened, anxious, have racing thoughts, be hyper vigilant, act irritable, or engage in excessive activities to cope.
