Learning about Different Realities

Growing up in a poor neighborhood without understanding his circumstances, the speaker only realized the disparities when moving to a better area and attending school. Despite having functioning but distant parents, he was placed in predominantly white schools for better opportunities. Struggling with his mixed race identity, he fought for respect and friendship. Through interactions with white families, he experienced having meals at a dinner table and going on vacations for the first time, realizing the stark differences in upbringing and lifestyle.
