Initially, grip strength was used as a proxy for overall strength and an indicator for engaging in resistance training due to its easy measurability. However, grip strength being associated with better health outcomes does not necessarily mean it should solely inform the decision to lift weights. Grip strength is simple to measure but should not be the sole basis for recommendations. Research suggests that factors like birth weight and maternal nutrition during pregnancy are major determinants of grip strength.
