NOTE

Assessing Magnesium Deficiency and Treatment

Assessing magnesium deficiency in individuals can be done by monitoring the amount of magnesium excreted daily to determine if there is a total body deficiency, or by conducting a test where the patient is loaded with magnesium to measure urinary excretion. In cases of normal renal function and symptoms like low bone density, palpitations, cramps, it is common to assume magnesium deficiency and proceed with replacement therapy. Magnesium deficiency has been linked to migraines as it plays a role in inhibiting the glutamate excitatory pathway of the NMDA receptor in the brain.
