Puritans in the new colony of Salem lived in constant fear of evil and physical danger. They were always on guard and vigilant, which led to a heightened sense of perception. However, the people of Salem were not ignorant and illiterate as commonly portrayed. In fact, they were highly educated and obsessed with reading and legal theory. The literacy rate in New England during the 17th century was exceptionally high due to the importance of prayer, which required reading.
