Focusing on enjoyment in activities can lead to improved performance by helping individuals to disengage from self-doubt and anxiety. When athletes indulge in the joy of the game, they tend to perform better, as their mental state can often be the biggest barrier to success. Thoughts of previous failures and anxieties can create mental roadblocks that hinder performance, making it crucial to address and manage these thoughts effectively. A strategy to overcome negative thinking includes redirecting focus toward positive distractions, similar to how one might find sleep through engaging activities. Therefore, fostering a mindset that favors enjoyment over pressure can unlock higher levels of performance.
What makes some people better at focusing? Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-hosts Chuck Nice and Gary O’Reilly learn about the neuroscience behind concentration and performance with neuroscientist Heather Berlin, PhD.
