Impact of Sunlight and Cloud Cover on Light Intensity

Sunlight at noon with no or minimal cloud cover can exceed 100,000 lux, reaching up to 300,000 lux on a really bright day. In contrast, indoor environments, even those that seem very bright, typically reach a maximum of 6,000 lux, with most being around 4,000 lux. Interestingly, on a cloudy day, outdoor light intensity can still average around 100,000 lux, although it may not seem as bright due to the absence of direct sunlight and the filtering of long wavelengths by cloud cover. Nevertheless, even in the presence of cloud cover, the circadian clock, or suprachiasmatic nucleus, continues to respond to the summed photons, highlighting the significance of light exposure on our biological rhythms.
