NOTE

Understanding Human and Animal Abilities of Intention and Joint Action

The unique ability of humans to understand and participate in joint action without explicit communication has been brought into question by evidence of similar abilities in animals. Studies on dogs and chimpanzees show that they are adept at understanding human intentions and the mental states of their conspecifics. Dogs have demonstrated high proficiency in picking up on human intention, while chimpanzees engage in deliberate deception, displaying insight into the mental states of others. This challenges the notion of human uniqueness in this area, although there is clear evidence that humans are among the few species with these abilities.
