Sleep deprivation can have detrimental effects on memory formation. When people are sleep deprived, there is a decrease in healthy learning-related activity in the hippocampus, the area responsible for encoding new memories. Sleep deprivation prevents the brain from effectively committing new experiences to memory, as it shuts down the memory inbox and prevents new incoming files from being stored. Additionally, sleep deprivation can impair the formation of strong connections between brain cells, which is crucial for encoding new information. Even selective deprivation of deep, non-REM sleep can result in the same impairments in brain activity and learning ability. On the other hand, getting a full eight hours of sleep is physiologically necessary for enhancing learning and memory abilities.
