NOTE

Heaven's Mandate and the Zhou Dynasty

Heaven granted rulers the Mandate to rule based on their morality, manifesting in peace and prosperity or disasters depending on their virtue. This concept led to the rise and fall of rulers in Chinese tradition. The transition from sha and shang dynasties to the Zhou dynasty marked a significant development in Chinese philosophy. The period between the 8th to 3rd centuries BCE was identified by Karl Jaspers as an axial age across civilizations from the Mediterranean to East China Sea.
