Cultivating Demand Drives Healthier Choices
Addressing public health requires a collaborative approach between the nutrition community and the food industry. While promoting a whole food diet is ideal, achieving widespread adoption seems unlikely. Instead, policy and regulation may be necessary to encourage product reformulation and incentivize industry to offer healthier options. The nutrition community must create demand for healthier products, as seen with the rise of low-fat yogurts and healthier airport food choices. Increased consumer interest in reduced salt and sugar options in supermarkets indicates that industry will respond favorably when demand for healthier alternatives grows.
