The experience of being captured in West Africa, taken to horrific dungeons and transported on slave ships to the Americas was so disorienting that slaveholders used it to depersonalize and control slaves. The deadly disease environment and high mortality rates during the seasoning period made it even more difficult for slaves to remake their social worlds and sense of self.
