#359 — Getting Used to It

Making Sense with Sam Harris

NOTE

Understanding Habituation and Its Potential Pitfalls

Habituation is the process where we show decreasing sensitivity to stimuli over time, becoming less aware of things we are consistently exposed to. This phenomenon occurs in all living creatures as our responses to expected stimuli fade away. While habituating to things like not being able to fly or achieve certain goals can be beneficial in preventing constant disappointment, habituation to negative aspects that can be changed may lead to complacency. Adapting to negative situations such as working with a mean person or living in a problematic environment could result in accepting these conditions as inevitable, ignoring the need for change and improvement.
