Early Signs of Overuse Injury: Accumulation of Water in the Tendon

Running research has shown that early signs of overuse injury include water accumulation in the tendon, leading to swelling and pain. Certain molecules, such as glycosaminoglycans, play a role in attracting water to the tendon. Even in top athletes, pain can be present without visible swelling, but MRI techniques can detect localized water accumulation. The initial symptoms of overusing the Achilles tendon include pain upon palpation and morning stiffness.
