Guns Part 5: The Footnote
Revisionist History
The Paradox of Trauma Centers in High-Crime Neighborhoods
Opening a trauma center on the south side is seen as financially unviable because treating gunshot wounds is expensive and the majority of victims are young black men without health insurance or with low-paying Medicaid coverage. This creates a paradox where the areas with the highest need for trauma centers cannot sustain them financially. The solution proposed is nationalized healthcare, like in Canada or Europe, where hospitals wouldn't have to worry about payer mix and can focus on providing care where it's needed the most.
