Growth Hormone Release During Sleep

A study by Siddhartha Ribeiro revealed that during a rat's sleep, memories are consolidated from the hippocampus to different areas of the cortex. Each subsequent REM sleep period moves the memory to the next area. Hormones like melatonin make us sleepy at night, while growth hormone release occurs during deep sleep. Missing the first deep sleep cycle means missing out on a big release of growth hormone.
