The Knowledge Project with Shane Parrish

NOTE

Treating Books Like Blogs

The internet has impacted our attention spans negatively, but it has also made us more selective in what we consume. Books, however, require a significant investment of time and effort. Many books are criticized for wrapping simple ideas in lengthy, convoluted text. This is why the speaker started reading more blogs in the late 90s. Blogs offered concise and digestible content. However, the speaker realized that books contain a wealth of wisdom that is not present in blogs. With the advent of e-readers, the speaker began treating books like blogs, skimming through them and jumping to interesting parts instead of feeling obligated to read them cover to cover. This perspective allows people to access a wider range of knowledge and avoid getting stuck on one book. The speaker believes that reading is essential and that forming a reading habit is more important than what one reads. Just like exercise, it's crucial to do something every day, whether it's reading books, blogs, or other forms of learning.
