Harness Effective Knowledge Organization Through Standards
Effective knowledge organization relies on the use of standards such as thesauri, taxonomies, and ontologies. An information thesaurus comprises terms that demonstrate various relationships, including hierarchical (broader, narrower) and associative (related), while also accommodating equivalence relationships for synonyms. Standards from organizations like the American National Standards Institute and ISO guide the creation of taxonomies. Ontologies further expand on taxonomies by modeling and describing domains of knowledge, encompassing concepts, classes, relationships, and attributes, with standards provided by the World Wide Web Consortium, including the Web Ontology Language (OWL) and Resource Description Framework (RDF). The Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) offers standards for vocabularies and interoperability, showing a trend toward taxonomies that facilitate sharing and exchanges. Taxonomies can be understood as a blend of structured hierarchies and controlled vocabularies, where unambiguous concepts are paired with synonyms. They can interface with content management systems that support both categories and tags, illustrating the fluid nature of taxonomy definition based on situational needs, as there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach.
