Dopamine can increase motivation, but continuously rewarding yourself for small accomplishments diminishes the value of the reward and reduces motivation. Similarly, only rewarding yourself when you achieve your goal undermines success. The best way to maintain ongoing motivation is to use random intermittent reinforcement, like casinos do, by randomly rewarding yourself and sometimes not rewarding at all.
