Why Theory
Subject Fit in Symbolic Structure
The idea that the subject doesn't fit within the symbolic structure is pivotal in Lacan's theory. According to Lacan, being cut by the signifier makes it impossible for an individual to fully integrate into the signifying order, leading to a perpetual sense of not fitting in. Contrastingly, Althusser believes that subjectivity is the moment of belonging and fitting in within the symbolic structure. This difference in perspective is evident in their interpretations of German Idealism, with Althusser integrating Lacan's thought into Marxism despite misinterpretations.
