Control Your Heart Rate Through Breathing (heart rate variability)

Breathing can directly control heart rate through the interaction between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. When inhaling, the diaphragm moves down, making the heart bigger and blood move more slowly, which signals the brain to speed up the heart rate. Conversely, when exhaling, the diaphragm moves up, making the heart smaller and blood flow faster, prompting the brain to slow down the heart rate. By making inhales longer and more vigorous than exhales, the heart rate can be sped up, and by making exhales longer and more vigorous than inhales, the heart rate can be slowed down. This method is effective in real time and can be used to control stress without requiring separate practice.
