Not Everything Needs a Functional Explanation
Functional explanations should stem from independent engineering analyses rather than solely from observations of human behavior. By examining how systems like stereo vision are designed for practical purposes—such as depth perception through geometry of camera placements—we can better understand their function. The relationship between engineered functionalities and human capabilities can validate our understanding of specific adaptations. However, certain aspects of human experience, like music, challenge traditional functional interpretations. Despite its importance in social contexts and emotional expression, music's exact role remains uncertain. It may not directly solve any obvious engineering problems but could instead be an evolutionary byproduct related to other adaptations, such as communication and rhythmic motor control.
