We were taught to ignore certain things in the human body, like cracks in tissue, because they were seen as unimportant. But a new technology has made us realize that our beliefs and training can hinder our understanding. This story is about how our preconceived notions can limit our perspective. It reminds us of a quote by Shindriyou Suzuki Roshi, who said that beginners have many possibilities while experts have few. This revelation is profound and makes us question what else we may have been taught that got in the way of true understanding.
In this episode we introduce you to a part of our bodies that was invisible to Western scientists until about five years ago; it’s called "the interstitium," a vast network of fluid channels inside the tissues around our organs that scientists have just begun to see, name, and understand. Along the way we look at how new technologies rub up against long-standing beliefs, and how millions of scientists and doctors failed to see what was right in front (and inside!) of their noses.
