The illusion of politics being a normativized, peaceful process allows people to avoid paying attention. But this apathy leaves them at the mercy of politics. Karl Schmidt argues that political apathy creates passive spectators who consume without feeling a part of a political cause. Without participating in the creation of political reality, life becomes watching a liberal soap opera on TV, detached from significant issues.
