There should be a developmental approach to the use of manipulatives in math instruction, starting with them but eventually moving away. The choice of manipulatives is crucial; they should be simple and stripped down to help children focus on abstract properties rather than appearances. Research suggests that overly colorful and diverse manipulatives can be detrimental, as children are better at matching similar items. Therefore, the emphasis should be on using manipulatives as the first stage towards an abstract mental representation of an amp.
