Relying solely on elections can be dangerous as governments can manipulate them. Essential mechanisms include an independent judiciary and a free press, which can serve as checks on power. Authoritarian leaders often undermine these safety measures, replacing independent judges with loyalists and converting media outlets into government propaganda tools. Even in regimes that maintain elections, such as North Korea, these processes become mere formalities, allowing dictators to claim popular support despite the absence of genuine democratic practices.
