How to Decarbonize the World’s Biggest Ships

Shift Key with Robinson Meyer and Jesse Jenkins

NOTE

Efficiency and Energy Density in Electrification

Electrifying ships by decarbonizing them and making costs comparable to fossil fuels is a feasible goal. The inefficiency of using fossil fuel engines compared to electric power trains is evident, with diesel engines operating at less than 50% efficiency. Electric motors offer a much higher efficiency rate, around 90%. Despite batteries having lower energy density than fuel, the increased efficiency in energy use compensates for it, making electrification a practical solution. The key is not matching the energy density of fuel but achieving sufficient energy density for efficient operation.
