Growing up in a fundamentalist Christian environment with a father who believed in a 6 to 10,000 year old earth, I had to come to grips with the rationality and value proposition of his beliefs, even though they were scientifically indefensible. This relates to the concept of mental immunity and the tribalism virus, which involves willful unreason and identity protective cognition. The creation versus evolution debate between Ken Ham and Bill Nye is a prime example of this virus.
