Protesters in the past used to smash machines, but the Luddites were stopped not because of technological progress, but because of state violence. It's important to realize that technological progress is often backed by power and violence. Even today, people are still dying in sweatshops. The idea of 'adopt or die' ignores the reality that adopting often means working in horrible conditions. The Luddites had no good outcome if they had adopted. When people say 'adopt', they really mean submission.

Paris Marx is joined by Molly Crabapple to discuss why AI image generation tools are a threat to illustrators and why we need to refuse the idea that Silicon Valley’s visions of technology are inevitable.
